Risk…defined

by LearnAsYouGrow on May 3, 2009

Some people think producing and marketing Christian children’s books is a risky endeavor. My response to them is “you are absolutely right”.

But is that a bad thing? What comes to mind when you hear the word “risk”?

While obtaining my undergraduate degree, I was taught the definition of risk is “variability in outcomes”. However, society tends to place negative connotations on risk. A quick search for the word “risk” on the Internet will produce various definitions that have adopted this societal view.

This likely results from the fact that most individuals are “risk-averse” and prefer certainty. In reality, however, variability does not necessarily mean any of the possible outcomes are inherently negative.

The fact that we followed God’s calling and started Learn As You Grow eliminated most of the potential negative outcomes. I would much rather address various possible outcomes following God’s path than face the risk of following my own.  God definitely has creative ideas on risk…ask Jonah. :-)

A quick review of the risk associated with our journey shows that we have chosen the correct path. We are confident our efforts will lead to great success and allow us to spread God’s light through our work. We look forward to this opportunity to serve.

In the event we fall short of these expectations; we have still grown in faith, learned a tremendous amount about the book industry & ourselves, and developed & renewed relationships with those helping us throughout the journey.

Under the worst-case scenario, we have returned some of the time & treasure bestowed on us and would donate some books to local libraries and churches. Along the way, we have received far more in return.

So, this “risky endeavor” has turned into a “sure bet”.

Thanks be to God.
